Glass Safety and Security – Tempered and Toughened Glass

Expertly fitted toughened glass by Sheerwater Glass

For many people, the rationale behind upgrading their windows and doors lies in the security and safety offered by the availability of different types of glass and additional locking systems.

The rate of domestic burglaries generally increases in tough economic times and properties with original single glazed windows and minimal security are often a soft target for criminals.

As the entry point to most homes and businesses, doors and windows represent the easiest opportunity for a potential intruder.  Secure double glazing, however, presents a serious challenge for a burglar.  The aluminium frame makes it impossible to ‘jemmy’ the window and criminals will think twice before attempting to break the double layer of impact-resistant glass.

Toughened Glass | More Information

There are a dazzling range of different types of glasses, used according to their particular attributes but safety glass is now mandatory in most areas of the home, as well as public buildings. The glass used in double glazing is usually either toughened or laminated. Safety glass is, as you might expect, much harder to break and when does shatter, there are none of the dangerous shards and splinters you find with standard glass.

  • Laminated glass comprises one or more interlayers, sandwiched between two or more sheets of float glass. The interlayers are composed of a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) laminate, or cast resin. If the glass suffers an impact, it may eventually fracture but the broken fragments will remain bonded to the interlayer. Read more about Laminated Glass here
  • Toughened, or tempered, glass is four to five times stronger than ordinary float glass. It’s made by a process of exposure to high temperatures followed by rapid cooling, which increases its tensile strength. If it is broken, relatively harmless fragments, known as ‘dice’, are formed which are unlikely to cause injury. Read more about the production of Toughened Glass

Toughened Glass can be manufactured with

  • Bevelling
  • Polished edges all round
  • Dubbed corners
  • Radius corners
  • Holes Cut
  • Notches
  • Cut-outs
  • Sand blasting
  • Acid etching
  • frosting
  • Brilliant cutting

Options to consider if you’re looking to further enhance the security of your doors and windows:

  • Choose to buy a system that comes with a double glazed window locking system
  • For locking systems, choose either a espagnolette, or multi-point, locking system, or a deadlock shoot bolt
  • Choose windows fitted with an internal beading system so the glass cannot be removed from the outside
  • Look for the BS 7950 kite mark

Locking systems:

  • The espagnolette or multi-point locking system comprises bolts (normally 3 pairs) set into the window and located into locking points in the frame when the handle is turned. The bolts need to be mushroom headed so that they engage behind the locking point, enabling the window to resist being forced away from the frame.
  • The deadlock shoot bolts are set into the frame at both opening side corners. There is also a deadlock which secures the opening side of the window at the handle.

So now you have the ‘nuts and bolts’ of what to look for in your new windows, come and talk to us at Sheerwater about how we can help you improve the security of your property.  We have an unrivalled reputation for glazing in Surrey.
