Glazing

Glazing services by Sheerwater Glass

We provide quality and efficient glazing services

To ‘glaze’ a window is to place glass in it, and this is traditionally achieved by using putty and a timber frame. Many people often decide to re-glaze (hack out and glass – HOG) windows. There are many reasons for doing this, but it usually happens when the original window is in a good enough condition to keep, but the glass needs to be replaced.

Windows can be re-glazed when the original glass breaks or when the putty has aged, failing and letting draughts through.  Another reason many people choose to re-glaze traditional timber windows is if the glass is not secure enough to defend your home from both the elements and intruders.

About Our Window Glazing

Should you have a need to replace a single pane or double glazed unit please call us on 01932 344415. The information that we would need in order to provide an estimate over the phone is:

  • The window type i.e. double or single glazed
  • The approximate size (to the nearest centimetre) of the visible glass
  • The material of the frame round the glass i.e. uPVC, Timber or Aluminium
  • The floor the broken glass is on
  • The geographic location

Old or damaged electrical wiring poses both a health and fire risk and therefore they need to be maintained and updated if necessary. Our checks will provide you with a complete report of your wiring quickly and without intrusion.

Better Insulation with Double and Triple Glazing

Windows were in the past single glazed, but as technology became more advanced, double glazing  has become the standard. Over the past few years triple glazed windows have become more popular. However, triple glazing can be expensive and it usually only makes financial sense to fit triple glazing if the rest of the property is supremely well insulated. Our Slimline uPVC double glazed windows are the most energy efficient of their kind and have a WER of A+ as standard.

Understanding U Values

glazing-u-values
Windows and the glass that is used to use to make them are assigned U-values. A U-value is a rating that gives you an idea of how adept the glass is at keeping heat inside a property.

The lower the rating is, the better the level of terminal instance given, a U-value of 0 would indicate that no heat is likely to escape through the window. This is something that many people bear in mind when investing in new windows or reinforcing old ones.  If you already have uPVC windows it is possible to improve the window energy rating of the window (WER) by upgrading the current double glazed units.

Building Regulations in the UK state that new-build windows can have a U-value of no more than 1.8. A rating of zero is currently unaffordable, so the best that you can currently expect to achieve from even the best windows is a rating of 0.6.

It is worth remembering that windows can only do so much in terms of insulation, and if your walls are badly-insulated, you can still expect to lose heat from the property relatively quickly no matter how good your windows are.

New Life from Secondary Glazing

Secondary glazing is often used to strengthen windows that have double-glazed glass inside them as an alternative to simply replacing the windows.

Once double-glazed windows reach the end of their perceived useful life – which can take two decades – they can be reinforced with secondary glazing instead of being thrown away.

This reduces the strain on the landfill sites and cuts costs for homeowners too. Secondary glazing is also regularly used for single pane windows too, especially in situations where the original character of the windows needs to be retained.

If you would like secondary glazing, we will give you an estimated cost then if you are happy with the price, we will arrange for a home visit to obtain the exact sizes of the pane for manufacturing purposes. We will then order the item and arrange a convenient time for the fitting of the replacement items.

We can repair broken windows and doors, replace foggy sealed units, repair leaded lights and much more.

When single, double or even triple glazed windows need to be fixed quickly, we can help to put things right. Whether a window has been broken or simply reached the end of its useful life, estimates for replacement glazing can usually be given over the phone. A visit to the relevant property is then made to take measurements for manufacturing, before the new glass is fitted.
