Meet the Team: Gordon
A Day in the Life of a Sheerwater Glass Director
This month one of Sheerwater Glass’ Directors, Gordon, celebrates 30 years at Sheerwater Glass! So we thought this would be the perfect opportunity to catch up with him for a chat about his 3 decades in the business and how Sheerwater Glass has evolved since he joined the company back in October 1988.
How has Sheerwater Glass changed since you first joined the family business?
Definitely the use of technology and IT. There were no mobile phones and we didn’t even have a fax machine until 1989. This has allowed for quicker, speedier responses, improved communication with staff and customers, and improved the way in which information is handed to us.
There are over 20 members of staff currently working at Sheerwater Glass; thirty years ago, how big was the team of staff you were working with?
There were just five of us. I was in sales, Dave worked in the glass shop, Kevin was our glazier, Graham the fitter and his lad.
How different is the showroom today?
Today we have three units, but when Sheerwater Glass first started out, the entire operation ran from only one, number 23 Dartmouth Ave, which is now the glass shop. In mid 1988 we took over number 25 and turned it into a dedicated window and door showroom. Then in 1994 we took on number 27.
Is there anything you miss from how the business ran 30 years ago?
The hustle and bustle of a busy shopping parade, serving the community and local factory workers.
What is the change you enjoy the most thirty years on?
The business truly turning into a family business in 2011.
Day to day, what is your main role within the business?
Overseeing operational activities and ensuring everything runs smoothly.
What skills do you need to have to carry out your job successfully?
A sense of humour, patience, years of experience and not to take everything too seriously.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Knowing a good job has been done gives me the most pleasure.
How do you enjoy spending your free time?
Spending time with my family and the grandchildren. I also enjoy a good walk and spending time in the garden.
How do you like to relax?
Watching a good movie on Netflix with a nice glass of red wine.
