What is Safety Glass?

Safety glass refers to a type of glass that has been manufactured to minimise the risk of serious injury if it is broken. It achieves this through two primary forms – toughened (or tempered) glass, and laminated glass. These varieties of glass are incredibly robust and, if broken, shatter into small, relatively harmless pieces rather than large, sharp shards that regular glass does. This inherent safety feature makes it a suitable choice for various applications where standard glass might pose a risk.

Where is Safety Glass Used?

Safety glass is primarily utilised in areas where there’s an elevated risk of human impact, such as doors, side panels, bathrooms, and low windows. Other common applications include car windows, glass floors, balustrades, and various other architectural features. Safety glass is also commonly used in commercial settings for storefronts, display cases, and certain types of machinery.

The Manufacturing Process of Safety Glass

Safety glass is created through a unique manufacturing process.

  1. Toughened glass: This type of safety glass undergoes a heat treatment process, where it is heated to an extreme temperature and then rapidly cooled. This process makes it four to five times stronger than regular glass.
  2. Laminated glass: Laminated safety glass consists of two or more glass panes with a layer of plastic (usually PVB or EVA) sandwiched between them. In the event of breakage, the plastic interlayer holds the glass pieces together, preventing them from scattering and causing potential harm.
