Windows, Doors, Conservatories and Glass across North Hampshire

Aldershot is nine miles from our showroom. Farnborough eleven, Fleet fourteen. North Hampshire is closer to us than most of Surrey.

Installed by our own FENSA registered team, not subcontractors. Showroom at Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU.

We have been fitting windows, doors and conservatories across this corner of Hampshire since 1972, from the Victorian garrison terraces of Aldershot to the Elvetham Heath and Ancells Farm estates at Fleet and the 1960s expansion estates at Basingstoke.

We cover GU11, GU12, GU14, GU17, GU46, GU51 and GU52, and out to RG27 and RG29, and we repair work other companies fitted as readily as we fit our own.

Where we work in North Hampshire, and what the housing is like

North Hampshire is not currently an administrative area. It is a label people use for the top of the county: Rushmoor, Hart and Basingstoke and Deane, sometimes stretched to take in Alton and Bordon. From 2028 it is reportedly due to become a real unitary authority combining the first three.

What holds it together is the housing, and that has a much clearer shape than the boundaries do.

Part of north Hampshire Towns What the housing is typically like, and how far we are
The garrison towns Aldershot, North Camp, Cove, Ash Vale The closest part of our whole service area, around nine miles. Aldershot became the army’s first permanent training camp in 1854 and grew from 875 people in 1851 to over 16,000 by 1861, so the core is dense Victorian terrace and military estate housing. Alongside it, Wellesley is delivering 3,850 new homes across 150 hectares of former MoD land
Farnborough Farnborough, Farnborough Park, the airfield fringe Around eleven miles. Grew from 702 people in 1801 to over 60,000 today, entirely on aviation. A higher than average proportion of managerial, professional and technical households. Under an active flight path, which makes acoustic glazing a real conversation rather than an upsell
Hart: the commuter towns Fleet, Church Crookham, Elvetham Heath, Yateley, Blackwater, Hawley, Hartley Wintney, Crondall, Odiham, Hook Around fourteen to twenty miles. Hart was ranked the least deprived district in England in 2019, and Halifax named it the UK’s most desirable place to live from 2011 to 2015. Fleet was uninhabited heathland until the railway arrived in 1840, so the stock runs from late Victorian and Edwardian town centre out to Ancells Farm, Zebon Copse and Elvetham Heath, the last of which added around 3,500 residents by 2008
Basingstoke Basingstoke, Chineham, Popley, Lychpit, Winklebury, Oakridge, Kempshott, Brighton Hill, South Ham, Buckskin, Hatch Warren Around 27 miles, the far edge of comfortable. Basingstoke grew from about 2,500 people in 1801 to over 52,000 by 1971 as an expanded town under the London overspill scheme, and to over 107,000 today. Its estates were designed as almost self contained communities, which means large, consistent cohorts of late 1960s and 1970s housing now on their second or third generation of glazing
The rural north and the downs Tadley, Whitchurch, Overton, Kingsclere, Oakley, Bramley, Sherborne St John Around 30 to 38 miles. North Wessex Downs country: chalk downland, flint and brick, thatch, and real planning constraint. A longer trip, and we will say so rather than promise a next day survey

Not sure whether we cover you? Check your postcode. It takes ten seconds and it is a better answer than a map.

My postcode says Camberley but I am in Hampshire. Who do I deal with?

This catches people out constantly along this border, and it is worth setting out plainly.

Blackwater and Hawley are GU17 with a Camberley post town, and they sit in Hart district, Hampshire. Ash and Ash Vale are GU12 with an Aldershot post town, and they sit in Guildford borough, Surrey. Sandhurst and College Town are GU47 with a Camberley post town, and they sit in Bracknell Forest, Berkshire. GU10, around Farnham, spans four local authorities across two counties.

The post town on your envelope has nothing to do with which council handles your planning. We establish the right authority at the survey rather than leaving it with you.

Do I need permission to replace my windows in north Hampshire?

Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, and that still applies inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street. Flats and maisonettes are treated differently to houses.

There are conservation areas at Odiham, Hartley Wintney, Whitchurch and Overton among others. We check the position on your address at the survey.

The North Wessex Downs, and what it covers

The North Wessex Downs National Landscape, designated in 1972, extends into northern Hampshire with its southern arm reaching Basingstoke. Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council is one of its managing authorities, and parts of the borough sit inside it.

It covers part of Basingstoke and Deane. It does not cover Hart or Rushmoor, so Aldershot, Farnborough and Fleet are outside it. The South Downs National Park is a different designation entirely and runs east from Winchester, touching East Hampshire and Winchester districts, not the north of the county.

There is no Metropolitan Green Belt in Hampshire, which surprises people moving over the border from Surrey.

Aircraft and traffic noise

Farnborough Airport and the M3 are both real factors here, and acoustic glazing helps with both. It uses a wider cavity and laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer, and secondary glazing is often more effective still because the air gap is much wider. Neither will make an aircraft inaudible, because sound comes through walls and roofs as well. If noise is why you are replacing your windows, say so at the survey, because it changes the specification.

  • Secondary glazing, which works for both conservation areas and noise
  • Timber and timber alternative flush casements
  • Vertical sliding sash windows in timber, timber alternative or uPVC
  • Acoustic laminated glass in sealed units
  • Heritage colour ranges and traditional ironmongery

Why north Hampshire homeowners choose Sheerwater Glass

  • We are closer than you think. Aldershot is around nine miles from our showroom and Farnborough around eleven. That is nearer than a good deal of Surrey.
  • Our own installers do the work. FENSA registered, City and Guilds and GQA qualified, employed by us. Nobody is subcontracted, so the person who surveys your house works for the same company as the person who fits it.
  • We know the garrison stock and the estate stock. Victorian terraces in Aldershot and late 1960s estates in Basingstoke are two very different jobs and we do both.
  • We take noise seriously. Under the Farnborough flight path and beside the M3, acoustic specification is a real question and we will tell you what actually helps.
  • The guarantee is insurance backed. 10 years on frames, glass and workmanship, underwritten by QA National Warranty, so your cover survives even if we are not here to honour it.

How long does an installation in North Hampshire take?

Around 8 to 10 weeks from order to fitting, and 1 to 2 days on site for most jobs. Here is the whole sequence.

Stage How long
Enquiry to home visit As little as 2 working days
Home visit to quotation 2 working days, up to 5 for specialist items
Order to technical survey Up to 10 working days
Order to installation Generally 8 to 10 weeks
Time on site Typically 1 to 2 days for a full house
Do you need to move out? No. You stay in the house throughout

You get a fitting date when you order, not a window of weeks. If a delivery slips, we call you before you have to call us.

Why quotes are valid for 14 days

Glass manufacturing is heavily energy dependent, so our costs move with energy prices. Rather than pad every quotation against a rise that may not happen, we quote the real number on the day. If it lapses, come back whenever you are ready and we will requote free of charge.

North Hampshire: your questions answered

How far are you from Aldershot and Farnborough?

Around nine miles from Aldershot and eleven from Farnborough, to our showroom at Slyfield Industrial Estate in Guildford. That is closer than a lot of the Surrey towns we cover. Fleet is around fourteen miles, Yateley and Hartley Wintney fifteen to seventeen, and Basingstoke around twenty seven.

I live in Blackwater. Is that Hampshire or Surrey?

Hampshire, in Hart district, even though your postcode is GU17 and your post town is Camberley. It is a common confusion along this border. Ash and Ash Vale are GU12 with an Aldershot post town but sit in Guildford borough, Surrey. Sandhurst is GU47 with a Camberley post town but sits in Bracknell Forest, Berkshire. We cover all of them, so it makes no difference to us, but it matters for planning.

Do you cover Basingstoke?

Yes, and we will be straight with you: it is around twenty seven miles, so it is the far edge of our range rather than the middle of it. We do work there, particularly on the late 1960s and 1970s expansion estates, but lead times may be longer than for Aldershot or Fleet.

Do I need planning permission to replace my windows?

Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, including inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street. There are conservation areas at Odiham, Hartley Wintney, Whitchurch and Overton among others. We check at the survey.

Will new windows help with aircraft noise from Farnborough?

They will reduce it, and they will not eliminate it. Acoustic glazing uses a wider cavity and laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer. Secondary glazing is often more effective still, because the air gap between the panes is much wider. Neither will make an aircraft inaudible, because sound comes through walls and roofs too. If noise is the reason for the job, tell us at the survey because it changes the specification.

Is north Hampshire in an AONB?

Part of it. The North Wessex Downs National Landscape reaches down to Basingstoke, and Basingstoke and Deane is one of its managing authorities. It does not cover Hart or Rushmoor, so Aldershot, Farnborough and Fleet are outside it. The South Downs National Park runs east from Winchester and does not touch north Hampshire. There is no green belt in Hampshire.

Is the council changing?

Reportedly yes. Hampshire is being reorganised, and Hart, Basingstoke and Deane, and Rushmoor are due to combine into a North Hampshire unitary authority from 2028. [CONFIRM against gov.uk before publishing.]

Can you repair windows and doors another company fitted?

Yes. Misted or blown sealed units, dropped or sticking doors, failed hinges, handles and locks, broken glass, VELUX faults and traditional putty glazing. You do not need to have bought the original installation from us.

Can I buy just one piece of glass?

Yes. We cut glass to order: replacement sealed units, mirrors, splashbacks, shelves, table tops, shower screens, greenhouse glass and safety glass. Bring your measurements to the glass and repairs surgery in Guildford, or send them through the cut glass quote form.

Will I get a FENSA certificate?

Yes, automatically, on every installation that qualifies. You will need it when you sell the house.

Ready to get a quote?

You’ll speak to a real person, not a call centre. We’ll talk you through options, no pressure.
