How a Double-Glazed Unit Is Replaced

2 min read Windows

If a double-glazed unit becomes damaged, misted, or begins to fail, it doesn’t always mean the entire window needs replacing. In many cases, the glass unit itself can be removed and replaced while keeping the existing frame in place.

In the video above, you can see how the process works and what’s involved when a double-glazed unit is replaced.

What Happens When a Double-Glazed Unit Is Replaced?

Replacing a sealed unit is a careful process designed to ensure the new glass sits correctly and the window continues to operate smoothly.

Typically, the steps include:

  • Removing the existing glass unit

The installer carefully removes the beading that holds the glass in place, allowing the old unit to be safely taken out without damaging the frame.
  • Preparing the frame

Once the old glass has been removed, the frame is checked and prepared so the new unit can be fitted properly.
  • Positioning the new double-glazed unit

The replacement glass is placed into the frame and positioned using packers. These small supports ensure the glass is correctly aligned and properly supported.
  • Refitting the beading

The beading is then reinstalled to secure the glass firmly within the frame.
  • Checking locks and openings

Finally, the installer checks that the window opens, closes, and locks correctly to ensure everything operates smoothly and securely.

Why Proper Installation Matters

Correct alignment and support are important when installing a new double-glazed unit. Using packers and refitting the beading correctly helps prevent unnecessary pressure on the glass and ensures the window continues to perform as it should.
