Berkshire is really two counties. The east is Thames Valley and M4 corridor: Slough, Reading, Bracknell, Windsor, Maidenhead, high tech employers and a housing stock that runs from Victorian terraces to a 1949 new town. The west is chalk downland, racehorse training and North Wessex Downs, and around three quarters of West Berkshire carries a National Landscape designation.
We work the eastern and southern end of it, the part nearest to us. We will tell you honestly if you are outside that.
Berkshire has had no county council since 1998. It is six unitary authorities: Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, and Wokingham. Which one you are in changes who you deal with for planning, and the housing varies just as much.
Here is the picture, and where we genuinely work.
| Part of Berkshire | Towns | What the housing is typically like, and how far we are |
|---|---|---|
| The Ascot belt | **Ascot**, North Ascot, South Ascot, Sunninghill, Sunningdale, Cheapside, Winkfield | Our closest part of Berkshire and our strongest. Large late Victorian and Edwardian houses in spacious grounds, a postwar town centre, and 1970s and 1980s estates. Around 17 miles from the showroom. **Ascot has its own page** |
| Bracknell Forest | Bracknell, Sandhurst, Crowthorne, Binfield, Warfield, College Town | Bracknell was designated a new town in 1949 and built on the neighbourhood principle, with districts of around 10,000 people each: Priestwood, Birch Hill, Great Hollands, Wildridings, Hanworth. A large and homogeneous post 1950s stock, much of it now on its second generation of glazing. Sandhurst and College Town are GU47, the same postcode area as our showroom. Genuinely close |
| Wokingham borough | Wokingham, Woodley, Earley, Winnersh, Twyford, Wargrave, Finchampstead, Shinfield, Sonning | The highest home ownership of any Berkshire authority: only around 18 per cent of residents rent. Lower Earley, begun in 1977, was one of the largest private housing schemes in Europe. A settled, improvement minded market, comfortably within reach |
| Reading and the Thames Valley | Reading, Caversham, Tilehurst, Woodley, Theale, Pangbourne, Purley on Thames | Reading has Victorian terraced housing from its nineteenth century manufacturing expansion and 853 Grade II listed buildings. It is a longer trip than Bracknell but a real market, and the sash and flush casement work suits what we do |
| Windsor, Maidenhead, Slough and the far west | Windsor, Eton, Maidenhead, Cookham, Datchet, Slough, plus Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford and Lambourn in West Berkshire | The furthest from us. Windsor’s streets are mostly mid to late nineteenth century. Slough has only 96 listed buildings and grew from a rural hamlet after 1920, so it is overwhelmingly twentieth century. West Berkshire is a different market again, largely rural and around three quarters National Landscape. We will be straight with you about lead times here rather than promise a next day survey |
Not sure whether we cover you? Check your postcode. It takes ten seconds and it is a better answer than a map.
Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, and that still applies inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street, which withdraws permitted development rights. Flats and maisonettes are treated differently to houses.
Berkshire has no county council, so the authority you deal with is one of six unitaries: Bracknell Forest, Reading, Slough, West Berkshire, Windsor and Maidenhead, or Wokingham. We establish which applies to your address at the survey.
The North Wessex Downs National Landscape, designated in 1972 and covering around 1,730 square kilometres, spans Berkshire, Hampshire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. In Berkshire it covers the west of the county: around three quarters of West Berkshire district, taking in the Berkshire Downs and the horse racing village of Lambourn, and reaching as far east as the suburbs of Reading.
It does not cover Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Wokingham or Ascot. Anyone telling you Berkshire has a county wide AONB has not checked. The Chilterns, which people often assume covers part of Berkshire, does not extend into the county at all.
Green belt coverage varies enormously across Berkshire: around 83 per cent of Windsor and Maidenhead, 35 per cent of Bracknell Forest, and 16 per cent of both Wokingham and Slough on 2014 government figures. That matters far more for conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms than for replacing windows, but it is why a glazed extension needs the planning position established before the design rather than after.

Glass manufacturing is heavily energy dependent, so our costs move with energy prices. Rather than pad every quotation against a rise that may not happen, we quote the real number on the day. If it lapses, come back whenever you are ready and we will requote free of charge.
“Nick from Sheerwater Glass just finished fitting my windows – Great service, quick, efficient and very friendly. Definitely recommend.”
Unit B5, Moorfield Point, 41 Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU. Just over the Surrey border, and closer to south Berkshire than you might expect: Sandhurst and College Town share the GU postcode area with us.
From Ascot it is around 17 miles. From Bracknell and Sandhurst it is a similar trip. From Reading it is further, and from Newbury further still, so if you are at the western end we would rather measure and quote at home than have you make the drive.

We cover the east and south of it properly: Ascot and Sunningdale, Bracknell, Sandhurst, Crowthorne, Wokingham, Woodley, Earley and Reading. Windsor, Maidenhead and Slough are across the M4 and further out, and West Berkshire, meaning Newbury, Thatcham, Hungerford and Lambourn, is the far end of the county. We will be straight with you rather than promise coverage we cannot deliver well. Check your postcode for a definite answer.
Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, including inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your unitary authority has made an Article 4 direction covering your street. We check the position on your address at the survey.
It depends on the material, the style and how many windows you are replacing, so any figure quoted before a survey is guesswork. What we can tell you is that the quotation is free, it is written, it is valid for 14 days, and there is no obligation attached to it. Finance is available over terms up to 10 years through Dopple if you would rather spread it.
Part of it. The North Wessex Downs National Landscape covers the west of the county, around three quarters of West Berkshire district, taking in the Berkshire Downs and Lambourn and reaching as far east as the Reading suburbs. It does not cover Slough, Windsor, Maidenhead, Bracknell, Wokingham or Ascot. The Chilterns does not extend into Berkshire at all, despite bordering it.
Slimline uPVC casements, most of the time, and composite front doors. Bracknell was designated a new town in 1949 and built as districts of around 10,000 people each, so the housing is consistent and the apertures are a reasonable size. A slimline frame gives you noticeably more glass and a better U value in the same opening.
Unit B5, Moorfield Point, 41 Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU, just over the Surrey border. Sandhurst and College Town actually share the GU postcode area with us. From Ascot and Bracknell it is a straightforward trip. From the western end of the county we would rather measure and quote at home.
Yes. Misted or blown sealed units, dropped or sticking doors, failed hinges, handles and locks, broken glass, VELUX faults and traditional putty glazing. You do not need to have bought the original installation from us.
Yes. We cut glass to order: replacement sealed units, mirrors, splashbacks, shelves, table tops, shower screens, greenhouse glass and safety glass. Bring your measurements to the glass and repairs surgery in Guildford, or send them through the cut glass quote form.
Yes, automatically, on every installation that qualifies. You will need it when you sell the house.
The company has been trading since 1972 and has worked across the Surrey and Berkshire border throughout.
You’ll speak to a real person, not a call centre. We’ll talk you through options, no pressure.
