Guildford has one of the widest ranges of housing stock of any town in Surrey. A medieval and Georgian centre with a high concentration of listed buildings. One of the first planned suburbs in Britain. A 1920s garden village built on Ebenezer Howard’s principles. Postwar estates. Villages in the Surrey Hills where the whole centre is a conservation area. What is right in Onslow Village would be wrong in Merrow, and neither would pass in Shere.

In Guildford, more often than elsewhere, yes. Guildford Borough Council’s own guidance states that its Article 4 directions restrict the ability to change, add or replace doors and windows on properties facing public views. Where an Article 4 direction applies, the permitted development right you would normally rely on has been removed, and you will need planning permission for the change. The same directions cover rooflines, porches, chimneys, boundary walls and exterior painting.
That is unusual, and it is the single most important thing to establish before you order anything. Listed buildings need consent separately, whatever you are doing. Flats and maisonettes are treated differently to houses.
We check this as part of the survey rather than leaving it with you, and if consent is needed we will tell you before you order, not after.
Guildford Borough Council designates conservation areas at Abbotswood, Bridge Street, Charlotteville and Warren Road, Chilworth, East Clandon, Holmbury St Mary, Onslow Village, Pirbright, Ripley, Shere, St Catherine’s, the Town Centre and Waterden Road.

You get a fitting date when you order, not a window of weeks. If a delivery slips, we call you before you have to call us.
Glass manufacturing is heavily energy dependent, so our costs move with energy prices. Rather than pad every quotation against a rise that may not happen, we quote the real number on the day. If it lapses, come back whenever you are ready and we will requote free of charge.

For both we would normally look at timber alternative flush casements or vertical sliding sash in a heritage colour rather than a standard uPVC casement.
Yes. Shere’s village centre conservation area alone contains 34 listed buildings, all pre 1830. Listed building consent is required for alterations, and we would normally recommend secondary glazing, which sits behind the original window and changes nothing about how the house looks from the street. We will tell you what is likely to be acceptable before you apply.
It depends on the material, the style and how many windows you are replacing, so any figure quoted before a survey is guesswork. The quotation is free, written, valid for 14 days, and carries no obligation. Finance is available over terms up to 10 years through Dopple if you would rather spread it.
