Showroom at Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU. FENSA registered installers, not subcontractors.
Surrey is the most wooded county in England, roughly a quarter of it is National Landscape, and a large part of what is left is green belt. It has medieval market towns, garden suburbs, postwar overspill estates, gated private estates and a good deal of ordinary suburb in between. There is no single answer to what suits a Surrey house.
We have been working it out one house at a time since 1972.
Our showroom is in Guildford, and we work outwards from it. That means we are genuinely local across west Surrey, we cover the Thames side towns comfortably, and we are honest about the fact that east Surrey is a longer trip.
Here is the picture, town by town.
| Part of Surrey | Towns | What the housing is typically like |
|---|---|---|
| The Guildford and Woking corridor, our home ground | **Guildford**, **Woking**, Godalming, Cranleigh, Send, Ripley, Shere | The widest range in the county. A medieval and Georgian town centre, one of Britain’s first planned suburbs, a 1920s garden village, postwar estates, and Surrey Hills villages where the whole centre is a conservation area |
| The north west heaths | **Camberley**, Frimley, Bagshot, Lightwater, Windlesham, Chobham, Bisley | A Victorian town built around two military colleges, a 1950s London overspill estate, late twentieth century suburb, and a 1,200 home new build neighbourhood at Deepcut |
| The Thames side towns | **Weybridge**, **Walton on Thames**, Esher, Cobham, Molesey, Hersham, Thames Ditton | Late Victorian and Edwardian cores, Georgian influenced villages, two gated private estates with one acre plots, and a much higher proportion of flats than the reputation suggests |
| The north and the Spelthorne end | **Staines upon Thames**, Ashford, Sunbury, Shepperton, Stanwell, Egham, Chertsey, Addlestone | The densest part of Surrey, largely interwar and postwar, a great deal of it built for Heathrow workers, and much of it on the Thames and Colne floodplain |
| East and south Surrey/td> | Reigate, Redhill, Dorking, Leatherhead, Epsom, Banstead, Caterham, Oxted, Horley | The furthest from us. We do work here, but it is a longer trip and we will be straight with you about lead times rather than promising a next day survey |
Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, and that still applies inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street, which withdraws permitted development rights. Flats and maisonettes are treated differently to houses.
Surrey is stricter than most counties on this, because there is more designated land. Guildford Borough Council, for one, states plainly that its Article 4 directions restrict the ability to change, add or replace doors and windows on properties facing public views. Which council you deal with, and what it has designated, is the first thing to establish.
Much of Surrey is Metropolitan Green Belt, and in some boroughs the great majority of it: around 94 per cent of Tandridge, 89 per cent of Guildford, 79 per cent of Runnymede and 63 per cent of Woking on 2014 government figures. That matters far more for conservatories, orangeries and garden rooms than for replacing windows, but it is the reason a glazed extension in Surrey needs the planning position established before the design, not after.
Surrey’s twelve councils are being replaced by two unitary authorities from April 2027. West Surrey will cover Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Runnymede, Woking, Guildford and Waverley. East Surrey will cover Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge.
If you are planning work that needs consent, it is worth knowing which authority will be handling it.
Proudly serving Surrey since 1972, we’re a family-run glazing company offering quality windows, doors, conservatories, and bespoke glass solutions. Whether you’re upgrading your home’s look with double glazing, choosing a new front door, or planning a unique orangery, our team is here to bring your vision to life.
Around 8 to 10 weeks from order to fitting, and 1 to 2 days on site for most jobs. Here is the whole sequence.
| Stage | How long |
|---|---|
| Enquiry to home visit | As little as 2 working days |
| Home visit to quotation | 2 working days, up to 5 for specialist items |
| Order to technical survey | Up to 10 working days |
| Order to installation | Generally 8 to 10 weeks |
| Time on site | Typically 1 to 2 days for a full house |
| Do you need to move out? | No. You stay in the house throughout |
You get a fitting date when you order, not a window of weeks. If a delivery slips, we call you before you have to call us.
Glass manufacturing is heavily energy dependent, so our costs move with energy prices. Rather than pad every quotation against a rise that may not happen, we quote the real number on the day. If it lapses, come back whenever you are ready and we will requote free of charge.
“Nick from Sheerwater Glass just finished fitting my windows – Great service, quick, efficient and very friendly. Definitely recommend.”
Unit B5, Moorfield Point, 41 Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU. Parking on site, no appointment needed.
Windows, doors, conservatory roofs and glass products are all on display, so you can open them, close them, feel the difference between a standard uPVC casement and our slimline range, and see colours properly rather than on a screen. It is a straightforward trip from most of west and north Surrey, and a longer one from the east, so if you would rather not make it we measure and quote at home.

We cover most of it, and we are honest about the rest. Our showroom is in Guildford, so west and north Surrey is our home ground: Guildford, Woking, Camberley, Godalming, Cranleigh, Weybridge, Walton, Staines and everything between. East Surrey, meaning Reigate, Redhill, Oxted, Caterham and Horley, is a longer trip and we will tell you that upfront rather than promise a next day survey. Check your postcode and you will get a straight answer.
Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, including inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street. Guildford, for instance, states that its Article 4 directions restrict replacing doors and windows on properties facing public views. We check the position on your address as part of the survey.
It can. The Surrey Hills National Landscape covers around 422 square kilometres, roughly a quarter of the county, and a further area carries an Area of Great Landscape Value designation. Inside those boundaries there is more scrutiny of what is visible from outside. We would normally be looking at timber, timber alternative or secondary glazing rather than a standard uPVC casement, and we will tell you what is likely to be acceptable before you commit.
At the moment, one of eleven boroughs and districts, plus Surrey County Council. From April 2027 that becomes two unitary authorities: West Surrey covering Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Runnymede, Woking, Guildford and Waverley, and East Surrey covering Elmbridge, Mole Valley, Epsom and Ewell, Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge. If your work needs consent, it is worth knowing which one will be handling it.
It depends on the material, the style and how many windows you are replacing, so any figure quoted before a survey is guesswork. The quotation is free, written, valid for 14 days, and carries no obligation. Finance is available over terms up to 10 years through Dopple if you would rather spread it.
Yes, and a lot of our work is exactly that. Listed buildings need listed building consent whatever you are doing. In conservation areas we would normally look at secondary glazing, which sits behind the original window and changes nothing about how the house looks from the street, or timber and timber alternative flush casements and vertical sliding sash.
Yes. Misted or blown sealed units, dropped or sticking doors, failed hinges, handles and locks, broken glass, VELUX faults and traditional putty glazing. You do not need to have bought the original installation from us and the company that fitted it does not need to still exist.
Yes. We cut glass to order: replacement sealed units, mirrors, splashbacks, shelves, table tops, shower screens, greenhouse glass and safety glass. Bring your measurements to the glass and repairs surgery in Guildford, Tuesday and Thursday 2pm to 5pm or Saturday 9am to 1pm.
Yes, automatically, on every installation that qualifies. You will need it when you sell the house.
Since 1972. The company was founded in Sheerwater, near Woking, and has been a Surrey business for over fifty years. It has never traded anywhere else.
