Middlesex was abolished as a county in 1965 and stopped being used as a postal county in 1996, but a great many people still write it and a great many houses were built when it existed. Which is fine. What matters practically is which council you are actually in, and whether a company can reach you.
We cover the Thames end of historic Middlesex: Staines, Ashford, Sunbury, Shepperton, Stanwell and Laleham, which are in Surrey today, and out towards Feltham and Hounslow. We are not going to pretend we are your local installer in Harrow or Enfield.
Middlesex was abolished on 1 April 1965 by the London Government Act 1963, the same Act that created Greater London. Its lieutenancy and magistracy went the following year, so it is not a ceremonial county either. Royal Mail kept “Middlesex” in postal addresses for another three decades, but postal counties stopped being used for sorting in 1996 and were deleted from the address file in 2000. Under Royal Mail’s flexible addressing policy you can still write it and it will simply be ignored.
The county itself went three ways. Most of it became outer London boroughs. The Staines and Sunbury end went to Surrey. Potters Bar went to Hertfordshire.
Here is where the historic county is now, and where we work.
| Part of historic Middlesex | Where it is now | Do we cover it? |
|---|---|---|
| Staines upon Thames, Ashford, Sunbury on Thames, Shepperton, Stanwell, Laleham | **Surrey.** Spelthorne Borough Council and Surrey County Council. From April 2027, the new West Surrey unitary authority, the same one our Guildford showroom will be in | **Yes, properly.** Around 17 to 20 miles. This is the part of Middlesex we genuinely serve, and there is a dedicated **Staines page** with the local detail on it |
| Hounslow, Isleworth, Brentford, Feltham, Hanworth | **Greater London.** London Borough of Hounslow | **Yes.** Around 19 to 22 miles. A reasonable trip, and we work here |
| Twickenham, Teddington, Hampton, Whitton | **Greater London.** London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, north bank only. Richmond, Kew and Barnes south of the river were historically Surrey, not Middlesex | **At the edge.** Around 21 to 24 miles, and a competitive market with many nearer installers |
| Uxbridge, Hayes, West Drayton, Ruislip, Northwood, Ickenham | **Greater London.** London Borough of Hillingdon | **A stretch.** 24 to 27 miles. We would rather be honest than take a job we cannot service well |
| Harrow, Pinner, Stanmore, Edgware, Wembley, Ealing, Enfield, Southgate | **Greater London.** Harrow, Brent, Ealing, Enfield boroughs | **No.** 30 to 45 miles. There are excellent installers much closer to you and we are not going to claim otherwise |
Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, and that still applies inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street. Flats and maisonettes are treated differently to houses.
There is no Middlesex council to apply to. In Spelthorne it is Spelthorne Borough Council. In the London boroughs it is the borough, with the Mayor of London’s London Plan sitting above it as a strategic layer. Worth knowing: **Spelthorne is not covered by the London Plan** despite being almost entirely inside the M25, because it is Surrey.
We establish which authority applies to your address at the survey.
Heathrow sits in Hillingdon and shapes the acoustic environment across Hounslow, Hillingdon and Spelthorne. A great deal of the postwar housing at Staines and Stanwell was built for airport workers, and a great deal of it is still under a flight path.
Acoustic glazing uses a wider cavity and, usually, laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer. Secondary glazing is often more effective still, because the air gap between the two panes is much wider than anything achievable in a sealed unit. Neither will make an aircraft inaudible, because sound also comes through walls, roofs and vents.
If noise is why you are replacing your windows, tell us at the survey. It changes the specification.
The Metropolitan Green Belt covers a surprising share of the outer west London boroughs: around 43 per cent of Hillingdon, 38 per cent of Enfield, 22 per cent of both Hounslow and Harrow, and 6 per cent of Ealing on 2017 and 2018 government figures. That matters more for conservatories and extensions than for windows, but it is why a glazed extension needs the planning position established before the design.

Around 8 to 10 weeks from order to fitting, and 1 to 2 days on site for most jobs. Here is the whole sequence.
| Stage | How long |
|---|---|
| Enquiry to home visit | As little as 2 working days |
| Home visit to quotation | 2 working days, up to 5 for specialist items |
| Order to technical survey | Up to 10 working days |
| Order to installation | Generally 8 to 10 weeks |
| Time on site | Typically 1 to 2 days for a full house |
| Do you need to move out? | No. You stay in the house throughout |
You get a fitting date when you order, not a window of weeks. If a delivery slips, we call you before you have to call us.
Glass manufacturing is heavily energy dependent, so our costs move with energy prices. Rather than pad every quotation against a rise that may not happen, we quote the real number on the day. If it lapses, come back whenever you are ready and we will requote free of charge.
“Nick from Sheerwater Glass just finished fitting my windows – Great service, quick, efficient and very friendly. Definitely recommend.”
Unit B5, Moorfield Point, 41 Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU. From Staines it is around 18 miles, realistically 35 to 45 minutes. From Hounslow or Feltham it is a similar trip. From Harrow or Enfield it is a very long way and we would not expect you to make it.
If the drive is more than you want, we measure and quote at home and bring samples with us.

Not administratively. It was abolished on 1 April 1965 by the London Government Act 1963, which also created Greater London, and its lieutenancy and magistracy went the following year. There is no Middlesex council, no county council and no Lord Lieutenant. The name survives in cricket, rugby and football, and in a great many addresses.
It depends on your postcode. TW15 to TW19 puts you in Spelthorne Borough Council, Surrey. TW1 to TW14 puts you in Hounslow or Richmond upon Thames. UB is mostly Hillingdon, HA is Harrow, Brent or Hillingdon, and EN is Enfield. There is no Middlesex authority to apply to for anything.
Royal Mail kept the postal counties after 1965 because changing the addresses of most of outer London would have been too costly. They stopped being used for sorting in 1996 when the system modernised, and were removed from the Postcode Address File in 2000. Under the flexible addressing policy you can still write it and it will simply be ignored.
We cover the Thames end properly: Staines, Ashford, Sunbury, Shepperton, Stanwell and Laleham, which are Surrey today, and out towards Feltham and Hounslow. Twickenham, Teddington and Hampton are at the edge of our range. Uxbridge and Hayes are a stretch. Harrow, Pinner, Wembley and Enfield are 30 to 45 miles away and you will get better service from someone closer. Check your postcode for a straight answer.
Surrey, since 1965, when Staines and Sunbury urban districts were transferred to Surrey County Council. They became the Borough of Spelthorne in 1974. Royal Mail kept Middlesex in the address for decades afterwards, which is why so much older paperwork says it. From April 2027 Spelthorne becomes part of a new West Surrey unitary authority, the same one our Guildford showroom will be in.
They will reduce it, and they will not eliminate it. Acoustic glazing uses a wider cavity and laminated glass with an acoustic interlayer, and secondary glazing is often more effective still because the air gap between the panes is much wider. Neither will make an aircraft inaudible, because sound comes through walls and roofs too. If noise is why you are replacing your windows, tell us at the survey.
Usually not. Replacing windows in a house is normally permitted development, including inside a conservation area. It changes if your house is listed, or if your council has made an Article 4 direction covering your street. There is no Middlesex authority, so it will be Spelthorne or a London borough. We check the position at the survey.
Yes. Misted or blown sealed units, dropped or sticking doors, failed hinges, handles and locks, broken glass, VELUX faults and traditional putty glazing. You do not need to have bought the original installation from us.
Yes, and this travels further than our fitting service does. We cut glass to order: replacement sealed units, mirrors, splashbacks, shelves, table tops, shower screens, greenhouse glass and safety glass. Bring your measurements to the glass and repairs surgery in Guildford, or send them through the cut glass quote form.
