Windows, Doors, Conservatories and Glass in Guildford

Our showroom is on Slyfield Industrial Estate, GU1, the same postcode as the High Street. We are not a company that covers Guildford. We are a Guildford company.

Fitting windows, doors and conservatories across the borough since 1972. Our own FENSA registered installers, not subcontractors.

From the town centre out to Merrow, Burpham, Onslow Village, Shalford, Normandy, Shere and the Horsleys, we have been fitting glazing across the Borough of Guildford for over fifty years. The showroom is a few minutes from most of it, so you can come and open a window, close a door and see a colour properly before you order anything.

No appointment needed. Parking on site.

Guildford's housing, and what it means for your windows

Guildford has one of the widest ranges of housing stock of any town in Surrey. A medieval and Georgian centre with a high concentration of listed buildings. One of the first planned suburbs in Britain. A 1920s garden village built on Ebenezer Howard’s principles. Postwar estates. Villages in the Surrey Hills where the whole centre is a conservation area. What is right in Onslow Village would be wrong in Merrow, and neither would pass in Shere.

Here is how we usually approach each part of the borough.

Part of the borough What is typically there What usually suits it
Town centre, Quarry Street, Bridge Street, St Catherine’s The historic core, with a high concentration of listed buildings and flats above retail. Covered by the Town Centre and Bridge Street conservation areas Timber sliding sash and casement, and secondary glazing where the originals are staying. Article 4 restrictions apply here, so check before you commit
Charlotteville, Stoke, Warren Road One of the first planned suburbs in Britain, with streets named after English doctors: Addison, Cheselden, Harvey, Jenner. A designated conservation area Flush casement and vertical sliding sash in timber or timber alternative, in heritage colours
Onslow Village, Guildford Park, Dennisville A garden village begun in 1920 on Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City principles, around 600 houses, parts of it now a conservation area with planning restrictions attached Timber alternative flush casements that hold the uniform frontages. Do not assume standard uPVC will be acceptable here
Bellfields, Stoughton, Westborough, Park Barn, Merrow, Burpham Mid twentieth century estate housing, a good deal of it former social housing now in private ownership. Bushy Hill at Merrow dates from the 1950s, Merrow Park from the mid 1980s, and Cardwell’s Keep is the 1990s redevelopment of Stoughton Barracks Slimline uPVC casements, which give you more glass and a better U value in the same aperture. Composite front doors
Shere, Albury, Ripley, Chilworth, Pirbright, Normandy, the Clandons and Horsleys Village stock, much of it pre 1830, inside the Surrey Hills National Landscape and the Metropolitan Green Belt. Shere’s village centre conservation area alone contains 34 listed buildings Timber flush casement, vertical sliding sash, secondary glazing, and timber front doors. Conservatories in Victorian or Edwardian styling where an extension is permitted at all

Do I need permission to replace my windows in Guildford?

In Guildford, more often than elsewhere, yes. Guildford Borough Council’s own guidance states that its Article 4 directions restrict the ability to change, add or replace doors and windows on properties facing public views. Where an Article 4 direction applies, the permitted development right you would normally rely on has been removed, and you will need planning permission for the change. The same directions cover rooflines, porches, chimneys, boundary walls and exterior painting.

That is unusual, and it is the single most important thing to establish before you order anything. Listed buildings need consent separately, whatever you are doing. Flats and maisonettes are treated differently to houses.

We check this as part of the survey rather than leaving it with you, and if consent is needed we will tell you before you order, not after.

Conservation areas in the Borough of Guildford

Guildford Borough Council designates conservation areas at Abbotswood, Bridge Street, Charlotteville and Warren Road, Chilworth, East Clandon, Holmbury St Mary, Onslow Village, Pirbright, Ripley, Shere, St Catherine’s, the Town Centre and Waterden Road.

  • Secondary glazing, which sits behind the original window and changes nothing about how the house looks from the street
  • Timber and timber alternative flush casements, which sit flush in the frame the way pre war windows did
  • Vertical sliding sash windows in timber, timber alternative or uPVC
  • Mock sash, where the look matters more than the mechanism and the budget is tighter
  • Heritage colour ranges and traditional ironmongery

Why Guildford homeowners choose Sheerwater Glass

  • We are in Guildford. The showroom is on Slyfield Industrial Estate in GU1, next to Bellfields and Stoughton, and the vans go out from there every morning. We are not travelling in from somewhere else.
  • Our own installers do the work. FENSA registered, City and Guilds and GQA qualified, employed by us. Nobody is subcontracted, so the person who surveys your house works for the same company as the person who fits it.
  • We know the Article 4 position. Guildford restricts window and door replacement on properties facing public views more tightly than most Surrey boroughs, and we check it before you order rather than after.
  • We will fix what someone else fitted. A large part of what we do here is repair work on windows and doors installed by companies that have since disappeared. You do not need to have bought from us.
  • The guarantee is insurance backed. 10 years on frames, glass and workmanship, underwritten by QA National Warranty, so your cover survives even if we are not here to honour it.

How long does an installation in Guildford take?

Around 8 to 10 weeks from order to fitting, and 1 to 2 days on site for most jobs. Here is the whole sequence.

Stage How long
Enquiry to home visit As little as 2 working days
Home visit to quotation 2 working days, up to 5 for specialist items
Order to technical survey Up to 10 working days
Order to installation Generally 8 to 10 weeks
Time on site Typically 1 to 2 days for a full house
Do you need to move out? No. You stay in the house throughout

You get a fitting date when you order, not a window of weeks. If a delivery slips, we call you before you have to call us.

Why quotes are valid for 14 days

Glass manufacturing is heavily energy dependent, so our costs move with energy prices. Rather than pad every quotation against a rise that may not happen, we quote the real number on the day. If it lapses, come back whenever you are ready and we will requote free of charge.

Guildford: your questions answered

Where is your Guildford showroom?

Unit B5, Moorfield Point, 41 Slyfield Industrial Estate, Guildford, GU1 1RU. About a mile and a half north of the High Street, with parking on site and no appointment needed. If you are coming about a repair or cut glass, come during the glass and repairs surgery: Tuesday and Thursday 2pm to 5pm, or Saturday 9am to 1pm.

Do you cover my part of the borough?

Yes. We cover the whole Borough of Guildford, from the town centre out to Shere, Ripley, Normandy, Effingham and the Horsleys. That is GU1 to GU5, plus GU12, GU23, GU24 and KT24 around the edges. If you are just outside, check your postcode on our areas page.

Do I need planning permission to replace my windows in Guildford?

Possibly, and more often than in most Surrey boroughs. Guildford Borough Council operates Article 4 directions which restrict the ability to change, add or replace doors and windows on properties facing public views. Where one applies, you will need planning permission. Listed buildings need consent separately. We check the position on your address as part of the survey.

Can you match the windows on a house in Onslow Village or Charlotteville?

Yes, and both are conservation areas, so matching matters. Onslow Village was built from 1920 on garden city principles with deliberately uniform frontages, and parts of it carry planning restrictions. Charlotteville is one of the first planned suburbs in Britain. For both we would normally look at timber alternative flush casements or vertical sliding sash in a heritage colour rather than a standard uPVC casement.

Can you work on a listed building or in Shere?

Yes. Shere’s village centre conservation area alone contains 34 listed buildings, all pre 1830. Listed building consent is required for alterations, and we would normally recommend secondary glazing, which sits behind the original window and changes nothing about how the house looks from the street. We will tell you what is likely to be acceptable before you apply.

How much does double glazing cost in Guildford?

It depends on the material, the style and how many windows you are replacing, so any figure quoted before a survey is guesswork. The quotation is free, written, valid for 14 days, and carries no obligation. Finance is available over terms up to 10 years through Dopple if you would rather spread it.

Can you repair windows and doors another company fitted?

Yes, and a lot of our Guildford work is exactly that. Misted or blown sealed units, dropped or sticking doors, failed hinges, handles and locks, broken glass, VELUX faults and traditional putty glazing. You do not need to have bought the original installation from us.

Can I buy just one piece of glass?

Yes. We cut glass to order: replacement sealed units, mirrors, splashbacks, shelves, table tops, shower screens, greenhouse glass and safety glass. Bring your measurements to the glass and repairs surgery, or send them through the cut glass quote form.

Will I get a FENSA certificate?

Yes, automatically, on every installation that qualifies. Our installers are FENSA registered, so your work is self certified for building regulations and the certificate is issued without you doing anything. You will need it when you sell the house.

How long have you been working in Guildford?

Since 1972. The company started in Sheerwater, near Woking, and has been based on Slyfield Industrial Estate in Guildford for [CONFIRM] years.
